On Appetites: Two More Podcast Episodes
a.k.a excited to share episodes three + four in a four-part series
Two weeks ago I shared the first two episodes in a four-part series all about APPETITES. I pursued this series to better understand how to be someone with unapologetic appetites. Today, I’m thrilled to share the last two episodes. Producing, recording, and editing this series has been cathartic and energizing.
This four-part series includes conversations with people I respect and admire about how they think about appetites and express that thinking in really insightful ways from different perspectives. I hope these conversations are as helpful for you as they have been for me.
The third conversation went live last week and it’s with Shaina Loew-Banayan, the author of Elegy for an Appetite and the chef + owner of Cafe Mutton in Hudson, New York.
Shaina and I had an incredibly honest conversation about the intersections of eating disorders, restaurant work, teenage-hood, queerness + gender.
The fourth + final conversation went live just this morning and it’s with Virginia Sole-Smith, someone I learn from and look to for all sorts of evidence-based reporting and meaningful storytelling around diet culture and anti fat bias.
Virginia is the journalist behind Burnt Toast, one of the best newsletters out there, where she reports on diet culture, feeding kids, and more. She is also the author of The Eating Instinct: Food Culture, Body Image and Guilt in America.Â
Virginia and I went in a few directions— we talk about different ways to be unapologetic, whether it’s by digging into a cheese board or wearing bright colors. We talk about our appetites for food and our professional appetites. We talk about having an appetite for rest.
Thanks so much for reading, for listening, for being out there. Cheers to all of us being unapologetically ourselves + supporting each other.
xo, Julia
Loved our conversation so much!
