I’m already thinking ahead to my fall teaching schedule and will DEFINITELY be offering some What Goes with What classes!!! A few fun updates from my life last week….
Top row left to right:
Cows in the neighbor’s field across from Long Season Farm, where I’ve been helping out on Thursday mornings…they’re so cute!!!
A really good dinner I made last Friday:
rice cooked in my new $19 rice cooker (it’s the 3 cup version of this one…I got it at H Mart in Paramus, NJ)
steamed Chinese broccoli + sautéed shiitake mushrooms drizzled with Kewpie Deep Roasted Sesame Dressing (my BFF recommended it to me and it’s SO GOOD)
a piece of salmon slathered with a dill/green garlic sauce I had made earlier that week (see here) cooked in the air fryer (line with parchment / 400ºF for 15 minutes!) — I also added some orange slices since I cut open an orange earlier to make cocktails…
My delicious lunch at H Mart (spicy tofu stew / bibimbap)
Middle row left to right:
Grace, my other half, celebrating completing grad school — I’m a proud wife!!!
Just really loved this stack of boxes I saw through my car window that say "Bon Appetite”
Upper East Side sidewalk hydrangeas I noticed on my way to see the Harlem Renaissance + Transatlanic Modernism show at The Met
Bottom row left to right:
Grace took this perfect portrait of Winky
Something about these rows of small dumpsters just felt very satisfying to me
It’s mowing season! My favorite pastime!
Also, THANK YOU to the overwhelmingly helpful responses to my question on behalf of Beth last week about tips for making cooking for physically accessible. I’m working on a BIG NEWSLETTER about it. If you have any tips, feel free to let me know or leave them in the comments.
Talk soon friends! xo, julia
Hi Julia! I have a question about rice cookers — the pic/link you posted reminded me to ask! I have one and EVERY time I use it, it bubbles over and gets starchy water/steam everywhere. It's the kind of rice cooker that has a lid that is attached and latches closed. I rinse the rice like there's no tomorrow and it doesn't make a difference. I use 1.5c of water to 1c rice. It was frustrating so I just went back to stovetop, but it does require a bit more diligent watching. I welcome any other troubleshooting tips because rice cookers are great!
Congratulations to Grace on finishing grad school!
If nobody mentioned the cookbook Cook As You Are by Ruby Tandoh, let me be the one. I loved how the book was organized, and how friendly it was to various accessibility needs including painful hands (RSIs/arthritis). It's like both a big hug and a sturdy kitchen stool at once. I do need to get a stool one of these days, in fact...
