I literally might just get this as a tattoo: "Let us fuck shit up together and care for each other like our lives depend on it - because they do" Thank you for this lovely reminder of how much cooking really is about caring...for ourselves and one another. See you Sunday! XO

Thank you for this, especially this week. I live in Texas, where JUST THIS AFTERNOON our governor announced that he was going to pursue prohibiting CHILDREN of undocumented people from attending public schools. Every single day it seems like Texas, the state I have lived in (and loved!) for the majority of my life does something else that is just. so. embarrassing and deeply, deeply sad. Deep down, I know that most Texans don't support these types of actions and I know that we've been gerrymandered into a hell hole by a party terrified of losing power. I try and remind myself of that, often, but dammit if it's hard to remember at times. So, that's my long-winded way of saying thank you for the reminder that I've already got the skillset needed to keep at it.

Here's to some peace and excellent meals with even better people this week.

So beautifully said. I needed this so much today. This has been a week--and this has been six years--I had hoped I would never see.

Thank you for this! I have known the possibility intellectually, but am not emotionally prepared.

I also wanted to share another amazing organization (I think that’s okay)— Abortion Care Network (particularly the keepourclinics campaign), which supports independent abortion providers. Independent providers serve three out of every five people who have an abortion, yet they receive only a fraction of public support. While providing funds to support individuals in accessing care is undoubtedly important, if clinics close, access further diminishes. This one is high up on my giving list. https://abortioncarenetwork.org/about/

Everyone keep up the good work and also be relentlessly kind to yourselves!

Yes of course that's okay— thank you so much for sharing.

Once a month, I perform in a live storytelling show. I sit around a big wooden table with likeminded peers, eat glorious pizza, and SHARE our struggles and frustrations. At home, I cook one big pot of something a week, and then reinvent it. This week it’s black bean soup. The first night is in a bowl, the next is over tortilla chips, then maybe as an enchilada filling with some potatoes. It’s nourishing and warm and gets my family around the table to talk, even if the kids are eating pb&j. My self care is the cooking itself: the chopping and stirring while listening to a podcast, and I care for them by feeding them and listening to their stories.

I'm so glad you have that as part of your monthly routine— sounds amazing. And as you know, I love, love the reinvention...
