About the Index

Today I am so delighted to share a HUGE PROJECT that Haley* has completed: an incredibly organized and searchable index of all of my cookbooks (Small Victories, Now & Again, Simply Julia and What Goes with What — we didn’t include Feed the Resistance since it has recipes from so many other contributors).

We’re talking about over 400 recipe titles organized in one place! In a world that prizes new, new, new!!!!, it feels really special to have this index to sort through over a decade of work (I started working on Small Victories in 2014!).

I’ve been wanting to create this index for a while, especially because I constantly forget which book of mine certain recipes are in, and, more importantly, many people have asked me to make something like this over the years.

But my brain works in handwritten charts, though, not large spreadsheets with various search features….

But Haley’s brain is wired for spreadsheets! So I asked her if she’d be game to help and wow! did she deliver.

If you’ve ever taken one of my classes, you know how great Haley is (Haley moderates the chat in all of my classes and is just the best). Remember when I wrote about how she tested every single recipe in What Goes with What? Or when I told you about when we finally met in person? Haley is now an Associate Food Editor at Simply Recipes (go Haley, go!) but still makes time to join me on Sundays for classes and for special projects like the index.

What’s in the Index

Here are a few screenshots from the index to give you a sense of its scale and scope:

The index includes a tab for each book and each is organized by chapter/section. There’s also a tab that includes EVERYTHING in one place. This way if you have one, two, three, or all four books, you can just check out the index to see which page a recipe is one.

You can also use the index to find things grouped by category (drinks, desserts, etc.) and dietary restrictions (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free).

Here’s how to do that:

• Column B: if you hover on the down arrow by “B” and click on “Sort sheet A to Z” to sort it alphabetically, this will group all like items together (not necessarily by book!) — so you’ll see all appetizers, all drinks, all chicken, etc.

  

• Same goes for columns G, H & I to sort for all vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free items.

How to Access the Index
