The week the LA fires began, I was on the phone with my mom and questioning whether I should cancel my upcoming class that weekend. “Who cares about gravy?” I said to her. Her response was simple and heartening: “it’s good to be together,” she said.
If you’ve been in my classes this month, you’ve heard me navigate this. What I’ve come to realize is what I’ve always known about my cooking classes: they’re an opportunity for so many of us, all in so many different places, to be together at the same time doing something tangible. For some, class is a reset button. For others, it’s more of a catalyst. For many, including myself, it’s a chance to feel simultaneously connected to others while also feeling firmly rooted at home.
None of this is life-changing, but it helps build a steady rhythm of caretaking and community. The more we get together to cook, the less cooking for each other feels daunting. The more bolstered and supported we feel, the more bolstering and support we can provide.
I am really grateful to all of you who are regulars and those who come just once or twice to try it out.
Plus, now instead of doing occasional fundraising classes, I now give a portion of proceeds from every single class to a different meaningful organization. This means just coming to class, in and of itself, is a way to give back to groups making a difference in our communities.
In the last few months we have given thousands of dollars between the following organizations:
Below are the three classes I’m teaching in February and a bit more about the organization each class is supporting.
Hope to see you there! All FAQs about my classes are here (including what to expect during class, how to gift my classes, etc.). Remember if you want to attend class and money is a barrier, just drop me a note and we’ll work something out!
And don’t forget: all of my previous classes are available in my video library! There are a whopping 115 classes to choose from! When you purchase these you get the class recording and class PDF of recipes, grocery list, etc.
